    Legend of Grey Team

Post by Fiddler on Tue Jan 15, 2013 11:13 pm

Grey Team was assembled after refitting of Spartan II's into the Spartan IV project. Together they proceeded to the planet Sigma Octanus IV. A planet previously a UNSC colony but then abandoned after a covenant attack. Years later the UNSC came back to find it still un-glassed and are wondering why the covenant chose to spare this world, when they set so many others to burn.

After ODST Recon patrols Came back unscathed the UNSC started setting up base, routine partols started around the newly re-founded colony and all was going surprisingly well. Too well. A patrol went off the grid and the base went to full alert. Spartans were sent in to the area expecting the worst; what ever thay may be.

After rescuing what was left of the ODST squad they found the entrance to an underground bunker. That was only the beginning.

Spartans (or other troops of varying type) can be as close or as far as they want from what the original grey team was. I've based the story off of accurate backstory (and had to adjust what was previously said since some of it simply wasn't accurate to the halo universe) There is a big difference between spartan II's, III's, and IV's and if you want please do look them up as they can help you define a character.

Other than that this is an open rp <:) role playing like was done in the last one is fine (you don't need to look up lore if you don't want to) and I'm excited to see where this'll go ^_^

    Current characters:
    Cathring bolt (Fiddler)
    Samuel (Wraith)

Ooc: I'll be starting this story tonight, I was hoping to have a few people in on this but two is enough and I've an actual plot behind what events should happen (or be avoided depending on actions) so it'll move either way.

At any point people are free to join in!

Ic: Some days are good, some days are bad, and some days are just trouble. It was that kind of day. Not that things were particularelly miserable, but one thing after another you knew something was building up.

Morning passed quite quickly the day of deployment. I didn't eat much but I didn't think I could stomach more than I did. I had that sinking feeling that I just couldn't shake. troop assignments went out and thankfully I was given a solo assignment trailing a squad known as Grey team. Their deployment was last week and were sent to investigate a missing ODST team on patrol. Orders read, don't be seen, follow the team and provide assistance only if required. If unknown technology or excessive enemy presence was encountered pull grey team out and report.

Wait a sec. Did they just put me on a baby sitting mission? My mind flew back to when I was in my teens playing dolls with the young girl next door and saying goodbye to her parents with a few credits in my hand after she had gone to sleep. This however was entirely different. These were spartans with the same training as I, something wasn't as transparent as they let off.

My ONI training told me to find out what was really happening, but it also told me to be patient.

Other than my troop assignment at least my new armour looked sleek. Not quite my old one with my personal adjustments but it would do.

"Special B Prep for departure in five!" I focused away from the data pad I was reading and back on my surroundings. Right, Pelican bay 4, Immediate departure. I took off at a quick jog saluting the Deck chief who woke me up.

As much as I didn't want to fly the jog over helped relax me, even though it made the trip shorter. My legs warmed up and I could feel my toes taking every step. I guess I would get used to this new kit after all.

Getting into the pelican I was adressed by two marines at attention "Ltn. Green and private Jenkins Mam! We'll be rebriefing you on the situation on the ground"

"At ease marines," Seeing them put their arms down but not completely relax, "I'm just a lady I don't bite, hard..." It was hard to express emotion through my helmet but they got the point.

"Yes mam, I know mam, if you'll take a seat we're waiting on one more."

Ooc: Nope, same one, we're getting there late and the briefing that the marine is about to give us will correct the outdated one we had before. I wanted to continue where the other group left off and any characters that were there before are still able to be re introduced if they want.

Yeah the backstory did get ajusted but the ajusted backstory does give us a way forward in plot.

Ooc : ok so we're to rescue my odst group.. guess i can be a spartan too then. Will need to build a bio unless my spartan died Surprised

Ic: i wake up to an incessant pounding at my door and nearly fire my already drawn pistol. Realizing that im on board a UNSC ship i quickly holster the sidearm and answer the door. The marine is mid swing in his endless hammering and hits me in my chest plate breaking his hand in multiple places. "What do you want marine?"

Groveling on the ground in pain he stammers his message. "Master.. Sergeant.. you're needed.. immediately.. at pelican bay.. four for departure."

"Quit being a wimp marine and get to the sickbay!" I shut my door behind me and throw my armor on with practiced movements. Finally.. i exit my room and stumble over the still groveling marine leaving him with a half dozen broken ribs and a dozen more bruised or cracked. I hardly give it a second thought as i rush to the
pelican. In a matter of moments my strides slow as i enter the bay. "At ease marines."

"Master Sergeant take a seat and we'll get this bird in the air. ETA on landing is twenty minutes. During which time we will inform you of your new mission."

"Good man. Carry on." With that said i join my fellow spartan across the aisle. "Well met Cathrine." I feel the familiar increase in gravity pull as the pelican hoovers for a moment in pre flight checks before entering dead space and grab the mediocre strap hanging from the ceiling as we begin moving foward.

Ic: "Nice to have you here" I replied. I had met Spartan Sam a month ago during training. As a team player I respected him for doing his part and doing it well. Of course being a bit of the opposite myself we'll have to see how well we can work together to maximize the conclusion of this op.

"Welcome on board Sir!" the Marine once again came to attention. Samual waved him at ease so we could start this last minute rebriefing. The hum of the engines started up at this point, and the hatches locked for flight. A short ride but still in a bloody dropship I cursed in my head.

"Your briefing spartans: 48 hours ago Grey team engaged enemy troups inside the red zone here -pointing to an area on the map in his datapad- Once there they eliminated enemy resistance and checked in with command. Latest report was 15 hours ago at 06:00 when they checked in before making a move on an underground facility they found. Enemy forces in the area have been neutralized and we'll be dropping you near their last known loaction. The entrances were reported to be steel hatches hidden in foliage.

Your mission will be to enter the facility and provide assistance in any way that may be required to Grey team and assess the situation underground. Secondary objectives include recapturing grey teams Comms equipment if anything has happened to them and to gain intelligence on the Insurgent operations on this planet."

A file downloaded into my hud with the blink of my eyes. "The file has been downloaded to your internal hardware for referall if required, the pelican and it's escort, mainly us marines mam, will land and secure the drop site but you're alone after that."

Ooc: there things a bit clearer for you?

Ic: looking over at sam "Mission clear? Did you remember to pack grey teams change of diapers?," I said in a slightly sarcastic tone, "So we get off, check for enemies on the surface and infiltrate. I prefer to operate on a solo basis so I won't give your orders unless a general decision has to be made. agreed?"

"i packed the diapers in your bags." i chuckle into my muted mic and review the mission details. Insertion at grid DY04523691.. i find the point on the topographic map quickly and shake my head at the missing teams' stupidity... "marine, is there a thermal map of this sector?"

"right here.." he taps a few buttons on his pad and the image is brought to my hud. "what exactly are you looking for?"

"the entrance you spoke of.." i see a faint blue dot on the map and transfer the image. "this seem like a good lead?"

"I'll mark that location on my HUD, nice eye." I commented. Suddenly the radio cut in, "30 Seconds until touchdown prepare for hatch release no hostiles sighted."

Alright this is it. Thrusters on the back of the drop ship suddenly veered vertical as they stopped our horizontal movement and slowed our descent. "Five, Four, Three, Two, On-" I hit the manual release for the door. The giant titanium piece lowered as I stood from my seat gun ready.

Thunk! I bent my knees to cushion the impact but it was still a good drop. "Moving!" holding my battle rifle out scanning the area front and right of us. I wasn't taking any chances. "Status?"

The coordinates pointed us north 20 degrees west. No enemies on my right so i turned around and checked my motion tracker for Samual. "Drop ship prep for launch we've been deployed successfully, 200 seconds and counting."

ooc: so if you covered the left the way to the nearest entrance is in front of you.

I follow catherine out and land in a crouch with my DMR up and scanning to the left. "Tracker all clear." I stand and survey ground in front of me. "Got boot prints heading west. By the number of sets I'd say this is the missing squad.." I make a mental replay of the actions the team took two days ago and try to puzzle out how they found the possible door i picked up on the map. "During their check-in a scout must have discovered the door."

"Roger that, take point I'll cover" giving the dropship a wide birth I took my first non tactical look around.

The green foliage was abundant and with the ground a reddish tone one could distinctly tell the colours apart. The sky was blue with a few clouds and the clearing where the dropship had landed was nothing more than a grassy patch in the forest. The tracks Sam had mentioned cut right across the clearing, Even I could tell where they were coming from and where they were going which meant they were at a leisurely pace when they came by.

A whir started up as the read hatch of the pelican closed "Special B this is echo niner seven seven lifting off, making a fly if no contact received at 06:00. see you tomorrow morning over." She lifted off with a powerful thrust upward "Thank you echo niner seven seven see you in the morning over."

I was at the west side of the clearing now just behind where samual dissapeared into the bushes. Entering the foliage changed the view from light to dark. the canopy above only letting streaks of light through the ground either covered with weeds or dead limbs of trees and leaves. I just came from a world of green to a world of brown.

Heh, I think I liked the green world better.

Following the tracks widely i dont notice anything unusual in the dense vegatetion growing on the plante for minutes that seem to drag by. After another dozen yards or so i switch my visor to thermal readings. There ahead of us is a vague reading of something not quite animate. "Think i found the door. Moving to inspect."

Cautiously i move further ahead leaving a wide berth of the tracks i had been following. I scan the trees one last time before i move closer to the now obvious obstruction in my visor. After a quick scan to find cathrines postion i inch closer to find an instrument panel to active the doors systemnand allow us entry. In a matter of seconds i spot the hacker device and type in the various standard codes taught to the ODST strike forces in case of situations like this but fail in all attempts to open the door. "You familiar with hack devices? None of the inputs i've tried have worked."

"We get to break in? You picked the right girl for the job." I pick up the pace as I homed onto his position. The entrance seemed like nothing more than a hole in the ground covered with a steel door. Was this really the front entrance?

"Cover me while I open this" I knelt down attaching my BR to one of the two magnetic attachments on my back. The device was a simple keypad with a hardcased LED screen. grabbing a skrewdriver I stuck it under the pad and gave it a good hit.

-CRACK!- The keypad came off with the breaking of metal attachments. Thank goodness my skrewdriver was made of industry grade titanium or else it would have too. Thankfully the wireing on the back didn't come loose as I found the leads heading into the circuit board and attached two crocodile clips. Now to generate some codes. I guessed that this was bought hardware which meant that the code ended with a pound sign.

I attached my black hat pad, opened a brute force pasword crack, changed some variables, and off it went. 1...2...3...4... I thought to myself. After flashing red a few times the LED screen flashed green and the seal on the door broke.

Putting my tools away I made the pad seem a little less broken and faced the door. It was opening now while the whir of a small hydraulic pump went to work.

The hole was roughly 4 feet square which lead vertically down into an electrically lit tunnel. "I hope you don't mind ladders" Taking a look down before I once again holstered my weapon and started my descent hopping he'd follow.

So far my relationship with Samual was as symbiotic as field protocol could get. He called me when he needed something done, and I did the same as we both proceeded towards our objective. Strange, I remember things being... Different before. I don't know if he remembers that night at the bar.

The ladder was quite long and descended at least 4-5 stories underground coming out into a small room with a red door marked -EMERGENCY ESCAPE- Funny how the wording said escape not exit.

I've noticed you've taken a little bit of a back seat as far as story progression goes. Feel free to describe our next encounter especially in this enemy base. All the story that's important right now is that Grey team went in ahead of us, and this is a big facility in which we may encounter bloody remains, or enemies that grey team might have missed.

I grab the ladder once im sure cathrine is clear and slide down without hesitation. Reaching the bottom i check my hands quickly noting the distinguishible burn marks i hadnt felt. I notice the same sign and look around. Solid gray walls that scream on instuitinalization greet my eyes. The hall breaks off into three sections going all directions.

I make a quick decision with no evidence of grey team's passage and head down the hall keeping to the right side. At the corner i check the left to make sure we arent ambushed and swing my DMR to the right hall.

The same sight greets me again with one exception, on the wall theres a door slightly ajar. I check on Catherine and move on the doorway. Upon reaching it i use my weapon to push it open all the way while scanning for hostiles. I note the wall of moniters with instrument panels glowing faintly and finish my sweep. Using the built-in coms of my armor i break the growing silence.

"This room looks like the mainframe for the compound." I walk over and scan the plethora of panels until i see a button for the hidden cameras and tap it. The screens flicker to life quickly showing a dozen halls that are all generally undistinguishible. A few are marked as what seem to be different levels. I whistle softly at the vast emptiness shown before me.

Ooc: im almost always passive in rps, but i can change it until we get to major points of the plot. Wonder how the bar incident will be brought up and what drama that will make haha

Mainframe? Here? Checking one more time my sensor for movement I turned around and looked into the room Sam was in. It was about the size of the average quarters but each wall was lined with what seemed like server boxes or mass computing units or something. The center console, which samual was now playing with to his will was a table which currently projected above it an exploded map of the compound.

Taking a closer look as he scrolled through the levels this place seemed quite unimaginatively built. Large chamber at what you might call the bottom about a mile below us and uniform floors above. Saying that however meant that this place was huge. Over five hundred floors spanned between us and that big room. This place has been here for a while.

-beep boop- "Hey! Sam whad did you pu-"

a few chunks of wall lifted into the ceiling on our right and a hallway extended to the door of an elevator.

"You're just lucky that did something useful." Walking towards the elevator the walls were clean, the kind of clean that you didn't get unless it was scrubbed twice a day by the strongest man you knew.

All they had on them was this marking.

    Spoiler:

And that was a marking I hoped to never see again.

"Come on, this place seems like bad news already." The elevator opened it's doors immediately. I got in, and took out my shotgun.

I follow her and keep my DMR across my chest. "I didnt touch anything other then to bring up a map of this place." As i say this the doors close without promt from the keypad. 'Someones here and directing us..' i tap the tigger guard wondering how soon im going to call upon the weapon.

Once the elevator stops its decent i move to the left side of the door and wait. As soon as the door opens i make a uturn while scanning the area, weapon at the ready. Seeing nothing of notice aside from the blue strips on all the walls i relax alittle and slowly make my way foward down the hall im facing.

The trip down was uneventful except for the absence of elevator music. I surprised myself with how out of place this small moving cubicle felt without it. Grey team would probably have found something similar to us and would have headed to the lowest level possible. I was somewhat eager to find out what this facilities purpose was.

The silence was broken with the doors opening. A long tunnel that opened into a wider area was now ahead of us. letting Sam take lead I followed him giving myself the best line of sight I could around him in the narrow passage. In the next room we saw more than what we expected.

As we reached the opening we could finally see the extent of the room before us. It had about the scale of a small warehouse and had a network of overhanging passageways above us. The room was generally filled with crates and equipment but that's when we noticed the rest. Explosion residue on our left, a box at an awkward angle against a wall nearby, cartridges all over the floor, and to top it all plasma scorch marks.

"Let me know if you find anything, I'll search right" Proceeding forwards while saying so. I found a few bodies in what you would have called defensible positions among the storage modules. They were human guards, looks like separatist markings on them from a local sector. Reaching down I picked up a plasma pistol. How did these men acquire covenant equipment?

They were cleanly taken out which meant these weren't the men that gave grey team trouble.

After processing the grizzly scene i moves to check the crates. "All research and testing equipment. Perhaps a foward party of a colonization process? Whatever the case it definately looks like they landed on one of the covenant's outposts."

I check a body next to the crate im at. Judging by the state of decay i give the time of death roughly three months ago. I grab his plamsa rifle and sling it across my back with the sniper rifle securely.

Looking back i see Catherine checking the area herself and slip off into an overwatch on one of the shelves of yet more equipment. After a quick check of the walls i lay down with my sights trained on the door 200 feet away. If anything wants to come in they have to get a lucky shot off. Sure as hell they wont be able to aim since my armor blends into the darkness of the room and im the best rifleman with a DMR withing the whole UNSC. Let them try..

The equipment seems mostly useless for our purposes, but I do find a datapad on the floor. It's frozen on a message it recieved
    -Orders for supply sergeant Mathews:
Equipment no longer needed, store near elevator bay in case of later use. Please distribute armaments from the bin we received from sector zero. Please lock down elevator access to the lower levels, and meet us in the artifact room for transport. Base will be closed after evacuation-

    Confirm message received? select: Y/N

Seems like the pad went into power saving more but was unable to fully reach the state. Damn I wish I knew more about full OS's. For now though we know that somewhere down here there's another way off the base. Seeing Sam gun ready at the door. "Alright let's move, this datapad gave me some info on an artifact or something that's down here. That'll be where Grey team must have headed."

The doorway ahead headed to a t intersection. Long corridor to our right, long corridor to our left. I don't remember seeing this on the map... Well left seems like a perfectly good direction! "Eany Meany miny mo! left it is!" The corridoor had several short dormatory hallways off the sides. Everything seemed still and lifeless. A chill crept up my spine. As we hit a 90 degree turn we came to a blast door marked -Warning! Hazardous Hardware!- Hazardous hardware? "What in Sergeant Major Avery Junior Johnson's name is this?" I said a little mockingly. The door was secured by a bolt controled by a console. -Password accepted, open when ready- it read. What? Every part of these didn't sound good.

"The other side of that door seems like bad news, ready to dance?" I reached for the door, in a few minutes I'll have realized that this was a mistake.

As soon as I released the bolt on the door and it swung open with a soft wirr I heard a noise behind us.

I saw a Huge Black object barreling towards us all I had time to do was brace for impact. "WHAT THE FU-!" I flew into the room taking Samual with me. Crashing into the floor I finally realized that what had hit us was a Massive spartan in black armour.

I stand up afterbeing thrown several feet foward. "Catherine, what did you..." i get cut off as i notice a new spartan alittle to late. I receive a powerful kick to the abs putting a new minor dent in my armor. "Bastard.." i gasp as i pick myself up again.

Picking out the spartan easily in the lighted room i tacklehim before he reaches Catherine again and pin him to the wall. My forearm pushing against his throat and rifle square on his visor open a com link. "You okay?"

I turn my attention to the spartan i have pined. "Whats your rank spartan and whats your business?"

I hit the floor with the loud thunk of metal on metal. Damn that hurt even with armor on. Seeing sam pin the brute I focus back on the situation "Fine for now" I could barely finish my sentence and stand up before finding an energy sword in my face.

the brute sam had pinned sounded like he never had much to say, but he growled in a low voice. "I'm ranked as your worst nightmare and you'd better ask my friends our business before they gut you for getting my armor dirty.

Another spartan with a DMR stood right behind Sam gun pointed at his head. "fuck. Stand down Sam" I slowly put my battle rifle on the ground, already thinking of a way out of this.

The room was about 30ft square and was quite an open space. We were near the south west corner of the room which was mostly bare except for some strange markings on the wall. In the center of the north face there was a strange device that looked like a pillar.
